What is AVID?
You may have heard AVID being mentioned by teachers and school administrators. Maybe you even saw AVID events posted on the school or district calendar. So what is AVID?
As defined by the AVID website (www.avid.org), AVID is:
"AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary through postsecondary that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change."
BCHS freshman students may be selected to participate in the AVID program based on recommendations from their 8th grade teachers and an application/interview process based on the AVID selection criteria. Various BCHS teachers, including Mr. Nagle, are trained as AVID teachers. So while certain students are selected to participate in the AVID experience, many additional students at BCHS benefit from the AVID instructional strategies and activities utilized by BCHS teachers on a daily basis. Expectations and rigor are high on for all students, leading to success in the classroom and community and preparedness for the student's future!
Both of the city's high schools offer the AVID program for students in 9th - 12th grades.
