The "Interactive" Notebook

The "Interactive Notebook" is a method of organizing the student notebook in order to promote interaction between and thinking about the ideas and concepts learned in science class.  Based on brain research, the notebook is organized with a left side and a right side to reflect the organization of the human brain with the left hemisphere and right hemisphere.  The notebook will be a daily tool used both in the classroom and at home.

The notebook is briefly overviewed below:

The LEFT Page:

When the notebook is opened flat, the left page is used for an activity or excercise that allows you (the student) to demonstrate your understanding of the information or "input" (learning) from the right page.  The left page activity requires you to interact with the information in creative, unique, and individual ways.  The left page shows HOW you learn in science class and WHAT you learn in science class.

A LEFT Page activity may include:
*Brainstorming
*Concept Maps
*Riddles
*Your Questions
*Illustrations/
Cartoons
*Poetry/Songs
*Flowcharts
*Graphic Organizers
*Mnemonics
*Foldables
*Metaphors/
Analogies
*Venn Diagrams
*Data and Graphs YOU Make
*Writing (Analysis, Reflection, Quickwrite, Conclusions)

Keys to Left Page Success

1.  Every left page gets used.
2.  Always use color...It helps the brain learn and organize information.
3.  Quizzes and tests are left side items.
4.  Homework problems are left side items, but they don't take the place of processing your notes!

The RIGHT Page:

When the notebook is opened flat, the right page is used for an "input" or learning activity.  Learning or input activities may vary, but the right side will be used for recording the important information that you are given in class.

The right side input may be represented by one of the following activities:

*Note taking from reading
*Note taking from class lecture
*Note taking from class demonstration
*Note taking from class discussion
*Data collection from lab procedure

Keys to Right Page Success

1.  Always start the page with the date and title or essential question at the top of the page.
2.  Use the right page to write down information you are given in class.
3.  Use Cornell style notes for lecture, discussion, reading, demonstration, and data collection.  Write your study questions as soon as possible.
4.  Write neatly. Use highlighting or underlining in color to make important information stand out.
5.  Write summaries at the bottom of each page of notes to reduce the amount you have to study.

A Note on Cornell Style Notes:

This year students will be learning/practicing the use of Cornell Style Notes.  Instruction, modeling, and practice will be given in class.  However, if you are interested in learning more about Cornell Style Notes, you may visit an overview presented by James Madison University at: http://coe.jmu.edu/LearningToolbox/cornellnotes.html  **Note: Following this link will take you to a web page outside of www.mrnagle.com.
